Google Acknowledges Play Store Causing Battery Life Issues for Some Users; Fix Coming

Google was in the headlines for the wrong reasons this week, with reports of 24x7 location tracking on Android devices. The search giant was also in the news for the most recent version of Google Play (v6.9.15) causing battery life issues for some users. Google has responded to the latter reports on its product forums. Addressing the issue, Google Play Community Manager Amanda said, "We identified a bug affecting a small number of users in a recent release of the Google Play. For users in the error state, the Google Play app was unable to obtain GPS, causing it to make frequent unsuccessful requests and use battery. We will be rolling out a fix in the next few days." As Google says, users can expect a fix to come their way soon, solving their battery problem. Till then, they can revert to an older version of Google Play (v5.1.11 is reportedly not causing any problems), a method complaining users on the Google Product Forum resorted to. To recall, users have since last we...

$1500 Google Glass Costs Less Than $80 to Make

Image
Google's controversial Internet-linked Glass eyewear was made available in the US at $1,500 to the general public for a limited period as a part of the company's Google Explorer programme in April. The Mountain View giant had later noted that its eyewear was sold out within a day. However, a new teardown of this Internet-connected wearable device by Teardown.com, a website that stripped the Glass down to the core and published estimates of the final bill of materials used in the device, has started a new debate.Notably, if the whopping $1,500 price tag of Google Glass is compared to the bill estimate of the materials used (which Teardown.com claims is $79.78 ) it works out to just a bit more than 5 percent of the retail price of the Glass. Some of the price estimates detailed by Teardown.com for the Google Glass include, display/ touchscreen and glass costs of $3; battery costs of $1.14; camera costs of $5.66; NAND (storage) costs of $8.18; processor costs of $13.96, and...

Google Nexus 8 and Android 4.5 to be announced in July

Image
Google is hosting its annual I/O Developers Conference on June 25 and June 26 where it is expected to make some major announcements. However, the event might not see unveiling of Google's next tablet Nexus 8 and Android iteration v4.5. According to new reports, the Nexus 8 and Android v4.5 will be officially announced in July this year. Citing a Google Dublin employee, website Android Geeks claims Google will not introduce Android 4.5 and new Nexus tablet during the I/O event. The Google employee also revealed the I/O conference will rather focus on news service, which the company has been aiming at for a long time. Moreover, Google will no longer develop 7-inch Nexus tablet, mainly because of growing competition in that segment. Google will now focus on the 8-inch segment, which has lesser number of competition. Samsung's Galaxy Note 8.0 and Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 and LG’s G Pad 8.3 are some popular 8-inch tablets. The Google employee did not reveal more informat...

Moto X review: The new Moto in town redefines mid-range

Image
Motorola seems to be targeting the price-conscious smartphone market with a vengeance. We already know that the budget Moto G has set cash registers ringing around the world, but Motorola hasn't taken its eyes off the mid-range smartphone market either.Less than two months after the release of the Moto G, comes the company's flagship, the Moto X . The newest member of the Motorola family is squarely aimed at delivering more in terms software, camera, and design without compromising on performance. When Motorola first announced the Moto X in August last year following its acquisition by Google, it seemed as though the company wanted to position this mid-range device as a premium offering, relying more on design than hardware specifications. The Moto X has only now made its way to the Indian market, while people overseas are talking of its successor. Thankfully, Motorola has priced it quite reasonably. If it wants to win back any of the market share it has lost in recent years...

Google develops new algorithm to block 100,000 search queries for child porn

Image
Google boss Eric Schmidt said Monday that the tech giant had developed new technology that makes it harder to find child sexual abuse images on the web. Writing in British newspaper the Daily Mail, Google's executive chairman said more than 100,000 searches would no longer feature such material in their results. The restrictions will initially apply to English-speaking countries but will be expanded to the rest of the world and 158 other languages within six months. The announcement comes ahead of Monday's Internet Safety Summit at Prime Minister David Cameron's Downing Street office, where Google and Microsoft will be joined by other Internet firms. In July, Cameron urged search engines to go further in blocking surfers from accessing illegal images. Schmidt wrote: "While society will never wholly eliminate such depravity, we should do everything in our power to protect children from harm." He said that in the last three months...

Nexus 6, Nexus 9 LTE to Get Android 7.0 Nougat Update in the 'Coming Weeks'

Google few weeks back started rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat for compatible Nexus devices. The Android Nougat update was rolled out to the Nexus 5X , Nexus 6P , Nexus 9 , Nexus Player , Pixel C tablet, and Android One General Mobile 4G devices gradually. The list of devices however missed out the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE devices giving an impression that they may miss out on Android N update altogether. Google has now confirmed that both the Motorola Google Nexus 6 and HTC Google Nexus 9 will receive the final Android 7.0 Nougat update "in the coming weeks." The company confirmed the details to Android Police without giving an exact timeline for the update. Unfortunately, Google has so far also not revealed the reasons for the delay of the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the devices. For those users who can't wait for the official rollout of Android 7.0 Nougat can register for the Android N Developer Preview to experience Nougat. To refresh, the final Android 7.0 Nougat b...

India made 2,691 requests for user data, second highest in the world: Google

Image
Google said Thursday the number of requests for user data from governments and law enforcement has doubled since 2010, as it renewed a push to reveal more about US demands. In its updated "transparency report" covering the first six months of 2013, the tech giant said the largest number of requests 10,918 came from the United States. That accounted for more than a third of the 25,879 requests Google received worldwide. The California Internet company renewed its argument for the ability to reveal more about US national security requests, disclosures of which must be lumped in with law enforcement inquiries. "We believe it's your right to know what kinds of requests and how many each government is making of us and other companies," Google's legal director Richard Salgado said in a blog posting. "However, the US Department of Justice contends that US law does not allow us to share information about some national security requests that we m...

Google TV has just enacted its first programming cancellation

Image
The Consumer Electronics Show next month in Las Vegas was meant to be the great coming-out party for Google's new software for televisions, which adds Web video and other computer smarts to TV sets. Although Google already has a deal with Sony for its Internet TVs, other television makers -- Toshiba, LG Electronics and Sharp -- were prepared to flaunt their versions of the systems.

Android 5.1 Lollipop Said to Boost Google Nexus 6 Performance, Battery Life

Image
A developer has tipped changes in Android 5.1 that are responsible for the perceived boost in the performance of the Nexus 6. While a number of changes have been observed beyond the official changelog of Android 5.1 Lollipop, which started rolling out earlier this month, a few new changes have been reported by a developer that optimise the performance and battery life of the Google Nexus 6. According to Francisco Franco, a developer, Google has made some changes in Android 5.1 Lollipop for the Nexus 6 smartphone which makes it faster. The developer states that after the update, all the four cores in Snapdragon 805 run all the time. Previously some cores were left idle based on the performance load, and the change apart from boosting aid to save time by not activating cores based on need. Of course, the reason for not running all cores at the same time was to conserve battery life. With all cores running simultaneously, an obvious drop in battery life is to be expected, rather than a...
